Project Based Learning Workshops (2 to 4 days, with follow up coaching)

Using design principles I outlined in the Handbook for Standards-Based Project Based Learning, a top-selling book published for secondary teachers by the Buck Institute for Education, participants learn how to design, implement, and manage community-oriented projects in secondary schools, career academies, and STEM schools. This workshop has been completed by over one thousand educators and can range from a one-day overview of project based learning to a full three days of project planning and collaboration for teams of teachers. Longer workshops include more information on how the school culture, context, and community can be used to support and enhance project based work in the classroom. Appropriate for 20 to 40 participants. As part of the follow-up agenda, this workshop can also incorporate webinars on topics such as Assessing Project Quality and Results, Examining Student Work, and Creating a Collaborative Culture.

GlobalRedesigns and Project Based Learning 2.0 

GlobalRedesigns is my non-profit organization focused on designing education that offers 'Life altering education for a livable future.' The goal for this work is to help develop a world-wide coaliton of youth focused on a positive future, global ideals, innovation, and cross cultural communication. If you are a social entrepreneur or educator who is either thinking about or starting a new form of schooling, I can help you incorporate best practices in project based learning, personal empowerment, social-emotional competencies, and authentic learning into your program. I call this Project Based Learning 2.0--the use of projects to transform the world.

 

PBL Leadership Development  

Use a 'train the trainers' model to develop PBL leaders in your school. Designed for teacher-leaders or core staff familiar with PBL, this 1 - 2 day workshop will prepare your PBL team to help other staff design, implement, and assess high quality prjojects. Topics include use of planning tools, rubric development, team management, coaching methods, assessment of student work, and protocols for debriefing and improving projects. Appropriate for 10 to 25 participants. Webinar support included.


Teaching Collaboration and Creativity: From hard to the hardest skills

Schools are just now entering the age of networked creativity and collaboration. In this half-day workshop, you will learn specific methods for teaching students to form collaborative teams focused on performance and innovation. Use rubrics, exercises, and exhibitions of learning to show students the benefits and techniques of divergent thinking, empathic relationships, committed teamwork, and collective project management skills. 

Integrating Project Based Learning and 21st Century Skills into Career Academies and STEM Education

The world has identified three categories of core skills--communication, collaboration, and self-management--necessary for adults to succeed in today's entrepreneurial, personalized world. Students are rarely taught these skills through intentional methods that incorporate practice, feedback, and mastery. In this workshop, educators learn how to integrate the teaching of these key skills into their academic curriculum and academy programs. This workshop can be expanded to include teaching educators a specific, highly-effective program for training students in public speaking and communication in the classroom.

        
School Redesign Coaching (5 to 20 days per year)

In conjunction with workshops on PBL and 21st century skills, I offer continuous coaching throughout the school year to help schools and STEM or career academies organize themselves as learning communities, develop a project based philosophy, and gain the tools necessary to sustain change and transformation. Coaching may include training in communication and team building, change management, and systems for helping schools operationalize their vision and begin the work of creating new systems of teaching, learning, and student success. Coaching may include webinars as well on on-site sessions. A typical school year begins with four days of presentation, and includes four to six days of coaching during the year.


The Heart in School Workshops and Coaching (2 - 6 hours)

Based on principles developed by the Institute for HeartMath and including fifteen years of scientific research and successful interventions with corporation, health care providers, government agencies, and schools, the Heart in School workshops help educators boost student performance, improve school relationships, and strengthen their own resiliency. The workshop shows teachers how to integrate heart-based teaching styles, habits of the heart, and social-emotional learning into daily routines in the classroom, as well as offering proven skills and strategies for transforming an educator's productivity, energy levels, and resiliency.
