Northwest Independent School District, Fort Worth, TX

Thom is assisting Northwest Independent School District (NISD) on two projects. Throughout 2009, Thom worked with a team of teachers and administrators who opened the Northwest High School STEM Academy in fall, 2009. He is also assisting the District in planning and preparing for the opening in fall, 2010, of the James M. Steele Accelerated High School in Roanoke, Texas. Both of these projects are ongoing during 2010.

Buck Institute for Education

The Buck Institute for Education offers a variety of on-site project based learning workshops designed for middle and high schools. Workshops to introduce PBL concepts and methodology may be scheduled for 1 - 2 days. More intensive coaching in PBL is also available. During the last four years, Thom has designed and led over 100 BIE workshops, and he will continue to serve as a lead national faculty member for BIE during 2010. Most recent BIE work includes West Virginia Department of Education, Public Health Management Corporation Out-of-School progams in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Clark County Schools in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Albuquerque Public Schools in New Mexico.

Region 10

For the last three years, Thom has worked with Texas STEM Academies and teachers from high schools in the Region 10 Education Services Center area, including Greenville ISD and Rockwall ISD. In 2009, Thom also worked with Dallas ISD Career-Technical Education (CTE) staff to train 25 facilitators in Project Based Learning. The facilitators will offer training in PBL for all Dallas ISD CTE teachers over the 2009 - 2010 school year.

Olds High School. Olds, AB Canada

Under a provincial grant to revitalize central Alberta, Olds High School has planned and built a new high school that will be known as a Community Learning Center. The Center will house the students of Olds High School, as well as employment, health, and other agencies. Over a two year period, Thom has helped the Olds High School team in a change management process to help staff shape a PBL environment that takes full advantage of projects that involve the community and help students learn the skills and habits of mind to help them succeed in their home province. The new school opens in fall, 2009.
